2 p.m. - Ann Wright speaking at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI
Topic: weapons transfers into conflict areas
Dr. Chris Jeske
One year after testifying to the United Nations Security Council on why facilitating weapons transfers into conflict areas is a detriment to peace, Col. Ann Wright will give an update on how the military-industrial complex continues to undermine international diplomatic efforts to achieve peace. Her UN testimony specifically drew attention to the United States’ role in prolonging conflicts by undermining ceasefire talks and supplying weapons in Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Gaza. Wright will share insights from her decades of involvement in conflict areas, first as a military official, later as a U.S. diplomat, and now as a peace activist. She will explain why she believes diplomacy is our best hope for peaceâ€"and what we can do when powerful forces conspire to derail diplomatic efforts. Ann Wright served 29 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves, where she retired as a Colonel. She was U.S. diplomat for 16 years, serving in U.S. Embassies in Nicaragua, Grenada, Somalia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan, and Mongolia. In 2003, she resigned from the U.S. government in opposition to the U.S. war on Iraq. Her anti-war activism over the past 20 years has spanned from Washington D.C. to Gaza, Israel, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Yemen, Cuba, and North and South Korea. She serves on the boards of CODEPINK, Veterans For Peace, International Peace Bureau, World BEYOND War, Gaza Freedom Flotilla, NO to NATO, Hawaii Peace and Justice, Pacific Peace Network, and Women Cross DMZ. She received the US Peace Prize by the US Peace Memorial Foundation in 2017. She is the co-author of “Dissent: Voices of Conscience”.
